WORKSHOP/CLASS OVERVIEW:

CLASS 1: Introduction to the Game VO Business

Welcome to the business of games. This in-depth class provides an overview of the game industry, the audience, the clients, and the business of acting for games. This workshop prepares you for understanding reels, auditioning, studio/home recording etiquette, performance techniques, game contracts and finding your wheelhouse. Starting actual script materials, you’ll have an opportunity to get professional  advice to launch your career in games.

CLASS 2: Home Recording

Auditions, reels, and self-records have always been an integral part of game casting. Recent global changes have placed a great need for virtual production and remote recording for games. Most projects require actors to re-orient their home recording systems to professionally engineer and perform remotely. In this 4-hour class, we’ll discuss best practices for choosing microphones and pre-amplifiers, using reflection filters, addressing sound transference, evaluating room size and booths, and proper mic placement. We’ll also demonstrate PCB’s proprietary remote recording rigs, and discuss working with script on screen, video etiquette, and video ADR playback. Students will get hands-on experience, learning how to work from home, mic techniques, and interfacing with game teams

CLASS 3: Fantasy / Combat / Emotes

Class 3 focuses on understanding and interpreting game copy, and adjusting your delivery for an array of character types.  Genres covered will include fantasy, combat, and open-world games. The course will help with understanding popular character archetypes, cultural influences, and breathing techniques to expand your range. This 4-hour class will also cover Efforts, Emotes, and Combat/Death reactions. Students will perform with actual recording scripts, director feedback, and professional recording processes, plus learning how to work add movement to your lines, and mic techniques.

CLASS 4: Echo Repeat

This class focuses on techniques working with motion capture, international localizations, dubbing, and fixed timing limitations. Echo/Repeat originated at PCB and is now a popular technique for Fantasy, RPGs, Anime, and Adventure games.  This class highlights the differences in character archetypes, cultural elements, and emphasizes vocal approaches to help broaden your range.  This 4-hour class will feature in-depth techniques for Echo/Repeat and ADR/timing limitations. You will also spend time in the recording booth focusing on understanding recordings scripts, script notations, matching reference, working with cues, and much more.

CLASS 5: Battle Chatter

Military titles have become some of the most popular in the gaming industry, and this 4-hour class will prepare you for combat!  Keith and Valerie Arem have directed some of the biggest warfare franchises in the genre (Call of Duty, Titanfall, Ghost Recon), and will guide you through the essentials of battle chatter: creating realistic performances, protecting and sustaining your voice, dealing with vocal stress, pre-life, changing energy/intensity during a session, and breathing techniques.

More and more voice-over projects involve physical performance, especially in the constantly-evolving gaming industry.  In this 4-hour class, you will work with head mounted vocal capture systems, PCB’s proprietary VOCAP technology, and interaction with multiple actors.
